Knitting Cigarettes: an ongoing performance

    _MG_8505 Smokes, 2015; Knit cigarettes, 20 cm x 178 cm (2)

While in public I knit reproductions of cigarettes scaled to my height. Knitting in public is often an easy way to strike up conversation. When, inevitably, a stranger asks what I am knitting I reply “I’m knitting a cigarette.” The conversation either falls flat and ends, or becomes a segue in discussing contemporary art practice with a total stranger. The resulting objects themselves are fairly humorous as anti-monuments to spent compulsion.
