I created this site-specific public art video work for projection on the Oakes Hotel in Niagara Falls. Since the Canadian side of Niagara Falls is filled with opulent spectacles, I chose to project an animation of the diminutive yet glorious Balls Falls, in nearby Lincoln, ON. The work offers viewers a moment to sink into a contemplative, reflective experience amidst the surrounding bustle.
Hiking in December to see Balls Falls completely frozen prompted this work. The normally tumultuous falls were frozen solid, and strangely immobile compared to their usual fluid state. To see Balls Falls as if arrested in motion was an odd and disorienting image, like a video freeze frame. I created this drawing in response, where a bewildering amount of lines create a dizzying amount of motion compared to the static, icy waterfall. The image evokes the sense of motion through its linework, while capturing a waterfall in arrested motion. The water is caught on the verge of transforming from solid to liquid.
