From the Shift series: 36 Years of Unringing Phones (2023), Forgotten Portrait (2021) and my forthcoming animation The Dark Matter Hippo of Grief: An Adoption Story (2025) centre
upon the Canadian Baby Scoop Adoption Era (1945-1985) during which over 400,000
newborns were placed with adoptive families. The works reveal the coercive legal,
medical and social mechanisms that enacted the Baby Scoop Era, pathologizing “birth
mothers” who were reduced to their biological function, paradoxically both indispensable
and disposable.
